Hope City Furniture Receives Prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service

DERBY, UK – Hope City Furniture, a dedicated group of volunteers based in Derby, is proud to announce that it has been honoured with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service. This prestigious accolade is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

Hope City Furniture is an independent charity committed to providing good quality furniture and household items free of charge to those who have been rehoused due to sudden or unexpected crises. Each year, the charity receives between 150 to 200 referrals from various organisations, departments of the council, and charities across Derby. Through these referrals, hundreds of items of furniture and appliances are given away to people from many different backgrounds.

The recipients of Hope City Furniture’s services include women and families rehoused due to domestic violence, refugees, those who have been homeless, victims of human trafficking, those transitioning from supported accommodation into independent living, and those experiencing financial difficulty.

This year, Hope City Furniture is one of 262 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups across the UK to receive this esteemed award. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service was created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee. His Majesty the King has expressed his desire to continue the Award following his accession.

The award winners are announced annually on the 14th November, The King’s Birthday. Representatives of Hope City Furniture will receive the award crystal and certificate from Elizabeth Fothergill, Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire. Additionally, two volunteers from the charity will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in the summer of 2024.

Directors of Hope City Furniture, Richard and Fiona Fraser, expressed their excitement at receiving the award: “We are absolutely delighted and feel very honoured that our charity’s work has been recognised in this way. This award is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our volunteers who tirelessly strive to make a difference in our community.”
